Praise be to God who rules from heaven, for I am thankful to Him for choosing me to look for his lost sheep on the streets. I will always praise His name with honor and love, for He means a lot to every living soul. I always do my routine work of visiting street kids in various places preaching the word of God, love, peace, and encouragement to them.
This week I moved to a certain slum in Kansanga, were I found a group of street kids, fifteen in number. The youngest I was told was about one year old. Her mother used to be street kid too, but as a result of rape, conceived and gave birth to a baby girl. Later on she abandoned the baby and vanished. They could not just watch the baby die, so they took care of the baby from the age of two months to now.
The baby didn’t look healthy. She is malnourished and needs medical attention. I asked the elder ones who were about ten years of age, how they were surviving {getting food}, taking care of the baby, and where they sleep at night. They told me they have a leader of about eighteen who some times buys them food. When I asked them how their leader gets the money to buy food, they said, ”some times he carries luggages”, one of them also said, “some times pick pocketing “ and also said they sleep on street verandas .
I then shared with them how God loves them. I told them about Christ Jesus and how they have so much value to Him, and then shared prayers with them. I actually didn’t have food to offer, but I promised I would re-visit when God provides me with food for them. I told them about Mom Jane, the mother to all street kids and that she loves them so much. I also tried finding out from them if I could take the baby and take care or her, but they said they needed to find out from their leader. I also asked if they knew their parents, but none of them knew.
I then moved on looking for more street kids. I reached a construction site where I got six kids of twelve to fourteen years of age being used to do heavy load work, carrying bricks made out of aggregate and cement. So in order to be with them I had to join the work. I folded my trousers and removed my shirt and started to work. But when the foreman saw me, he tried stopping me saying he had no money to pay me. So I asked him how much he was paying the young kids he was using,. He proudly said, “2,000 shillings” (82 cents). I then asked him why he preferred using young children instead of adults and he answered, “I pay them less so I make much profit at the end of the day”. I asked what the real pay for the work is. He said, “it’s supposed to be 16,000 shillings, $6.50, so you see the difference”? I told him I was only helping the kids to do the work which he was fine with, so I continued to work with the kids with each brick weighing around twelve kgs.
After two hours of work, it was time to rest. They went and sat in some nearby shed so I followed them and preached the gospel to them. I told them about the greatness of Jesus, and how he loves them. So they all decided to give their lives to Christ Jesus as their personal savior. I then prayed for them and promised to keep on visiting them to build up their faith. I love to do this work mom. May God cause many people to help support our work so that the Street Kids of Uganda get to hear the good news of Jesus the same as any other kids in this world. These kids have hopeless lives without Him.
